Town History

 

The first recorded land purchase was made by Jonas Sellick on May 1, 1802. The land he purchased was located at the intersection of West Middlebury and East Bethany Roads, known later as Wrights Corner. He made the purchase at the Holland Land Office in Genesee County.

Other early settlers were Starin Stearns and Jabish Warren, both purchasing land in May 1802. The Town of Middlebury was formed on March 28, 1812 from the Town of Warsaw, part of Genesee County at that time.

 

Wyoming County was formed on May 14, 1841 and the Town of Middlebury became part of Wyoming County.

 

Included in the Town of Middlebury is the Village of Wyoming, first called Newell's Settlement and settled by Silas Newell in 1809; West Middlebury, settled in 1808; along with the hamlet of Dale settled in 1825.
